City with character, drive and beat

If you call Lisbon, Rome, Budapest, Athens, Stockholm or Warsaw home, you could be here in two hours. If you’re flying in from Milan, London, Zurich, Prague, or Copenhagen, it’ll only take 90 minutes. And if you’re coming from Brussels, Berlin or Paris, you'll be here in less than an hour.

The city of Duisburg on the Rhine is located in the west of the German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). It is a car drive of less than 20 minutes away from the international airport in Düsseldorf.

NRW is quickly accessible from anywhere in the world and characterised by the variety of its landscapes and regions – just some of the advantages of this Land inhabited by 18 million people and situated on the Rhine and Ruhr rivers.

No matter what kind of location your script calls for, you will find it in North Rhine-Westphalia: working class areas and castles with moats, Tudor-style homes and skyscrapers, industrial monuments and modern glass and steel architecture. Should you not find the background of your choice it can be built in one of the many studios here.

Duisburg offers filmmakers lots of unspoilt motifs: Europe's biggest inland harbour, gigantic industrial areas, traditional working class surroundings, romanticism by green riverside meadows and in rural villages.

Event managers find original locations between the traditional and the modern. For example in 1997 the international actor Dennis Hopper made the action thriller "Straight Shooter" in futuristic office architecture and in a former steelworks. The renowned German film director Sönke Wortmann found the locations for his historical film about the Soccer World Cup in 1954 "The Miracle of Bern“ in industrialised north Duisburg in 2003.

For more than 20 years the city has been a backcloth for TV productions and movie films. Your advantage – you get professional support right on the spot. In this context, the Duisburg Business Promotion Agency co-operates closely with the Film Commission and is involved in the NRW Network of Film Cities: To support any native or foreign producer who wants to film and work in North Rhine-Westphalia the Filmstiftung NRW founded the Film Commission in 1999.

The Film Commission is a regional organisation, an advisory council and part of the international Network of Film Commissions. Since 2001 it has been offering, jointly with the NRW film cities and the Location Scouts, a motif database, in which also more than 100 Duisburg motifs are stored and described in detail. Native and foreign producers will be given advice during their search for locations, studios, technical film services and professionals working in the industry.

The local business promotion agency also assists in establishing contacts with authorities and in acquiring film permits or finding a rented office for production work.

How much will advice from the Film Commission NRW or from the Duisburg Business Promotion Agency cost?
Advice and support from both institutions is provided free of charge.
