The most important educational institution in Duisburg is Duisburg/Essen University. The university is an important stimulus for the business and makes Duisburg an international meeting place for the sciences. Officially opened in 1655 with the traditional four faculties of theology, philosophy, jurisprudence and medicine, Duisburg’s first university was dissolved in 1818 in favour of the newly founded university in Bonn. In 1972, Duisburg became a university town again.
Students and academic staff Today, there are about 16,000 students enrolled in five faculties. 210 professors and 650 other full-time academic staff are engaged in teaching and research. Duisburg/Essen University provides all the advantages of a relatively small university with many opportunities for close contact between students and teaching staff.
Students from 110 different countries are enrolled at the university, which guarantees a lively international student community. The international orientation of the university gives Duisburg a very distinctive atmosphere and character.
