| The face of Duisburg is changing |
| With more than half a million inhabitants, Duisburg is number twelve in the ranking of the German cities and the third largest city in the metropolitan region of the Ruhr. |
| Between steel and logistics |
 |
Duisburg is situated in the west of the metropolitan region of the Ruhr, a region covering 4,400 km², which, with 5.4 million inhabitants is the third largest conurbation in Europe after London and Paris.
Duisburg's traditional economic pillar is the steel industry. Iron and steel led, between the 19th and 20th centuries to the vigorous development of the city. Today the steel industry is concentrated at four locations within the city boundaries and has an extremely high technological level in products, processes and environmental standards. Duisburg is, according to the production figures, steel location number one in Europe. Here, for example, ThyssenKrupp produce tailored blanks, laser-welded body parts for the automotive industry.
The secondary sector, however, no longer plays the main role in Duisburg by any means. Within the scope of structural change main economic areas have evolved which the city wants to further develop and consolidate over the next few years. The aim is to give the business location of Duisburg an unmistakable character.

| Logistics as a high ranking competence field |
 |
Logistics ranks among the competence fields with a future. Duisburg has the largest inland port in Europe, a widely ramified network of traffic routes and a central position in the European sales market. Thanks to these prerequisites, today numerous logistics companies are located in Duisburg, including international players like New Wave Logistics, GEODIS Logistics, CM Eurologistik, Kühne & Nagel, ABX Logistics, Rhenus and P & O. Further main areas are the internet economy and micro-technology, material technology, person-related and company-orientated services, urban entertainment and the retail trade as well as city tourism.

| Projects change the structure |
 |
The face of Duisburg is changing. Currently the construction cranes are hovering over various points in the city. Major projects such as architecturally unmistakable office real estate, a football arena and the Infineon's second largest development centre in Europe are being implemented in Duisburg. Development covering large areas such as Duisburg Inner Harbour – a former place of transhipment for grain, according to Sir Norman Foster's master plan, transformed into an attractive city quarter by the waterside – stand for the successful structural change.
|
| Development of the inner city |
 |
A further milestone is to be set in the next few years: the upgrading of Duisburg's inner city. Large retail trade centres are planned at the central station and in the city centre. The first inner city project is already under construction – Urbanum Duisburg. In the middle of the city centre, along the main shopping street, a congress and event centre with a casino, restaurants and retail shops and stores is to come into being.
