| Welcome to NRW and the Ruhr region |
| Of Germany’s 16 federal states, Nordrhein-Westfalen (NRW) with 18 million inhabitants is the most densely populated. |
| One out of nine residents is a foreigner |
 |
Its history is characterised by centuries of cultural exchange. The region has a long tradition of immigration and integration. Today one out of nine residents is a foreigner: NRW has a larger percentage of foreign nationals than any other region in Europe.
NRW is quickly accessible from anywhere in the world and characterised by the variety of its landscapes and regions – just some of the advantages of this federal state situated near the Rhine and Ruhr rivers.

| Coming to the metropolitan Ruhr region |
 |
The city of Duisburg on the Rhine is located in the west of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). It can be reached by car from the international airport in Düsseldorf within less than 20 minutes.
The federal state is the home of one of the largest metropolitan areas in Europe – the region known as the Ruhr (named after the river) with its population of over five million people. The Ruhr extends over more than 100 kilometres from Duisburg in the west to Hamm in the east.
Once dominated by the coal and steel industries, the region today predominantly focuses on new businesses in the service and high tech sectors. For example it has one of Europe’s largest university networks.
